LSAT Test Center Inclement Weather Closings Due To Snow

LSAT Blog Test Center Inclement Weather Closings Due To SnowUPDATE: I have created a new blog post about this for those taking the February 2013 LSAT.

The blog post applies to some test-takers taking the February 6, 2010 LSAT. If you're in an area potentially affected by snow or other "inclement weather," keep an eye on LSAC's website and check your email regularly.

(Note: Inclement weather is a major reason that LSAC does not release February LSAT exams - they're saving them for future make-up test administrations.)

As of Saturday 9:00AM EST, the following test centers were closed according to LSAC's website:

Please continue to check this website alert for any additional test center closings due to inclement weather. LSAC will contact you via email as soon as possible (most likely the week after the test date) regarding other options, including a make-up test.

For the December 5, 2009 LSAT exam, when some test centers were closed due to inclement weather, affected test-takers received the following email:
Dear Candidates:

The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) will not be administered on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 8:30 am at ________, test center # ____, because of inclement weather. The Law School Admission Council will make arrangements for a make-up test. Our goal is for this to occur within the next two weeks. Keep your admission ticket. We will contact you via e-mail with further information.

If you have any questions, please contact LSAC 215-968.1001 or by email at LSACinfo@LSAC.org.

LSAC regrets any inconvenience caused by this change.

Thank you,

  1. How does taking a "make-up" test affect your score and percentile? Will the test be substantially different from the February 2010 that most other people are taking?

I'm in Washington, DC and it looks very much like the Georgetown Test Center will be closed. Any tips to make use of the extra time?

    ReplyDelete
  2. I agree with Michael, I would love to know how the make-up test works/how the scoring is done. And also what happens if you are unable to make their make-up. If you have any insight, that'd be great :)

    ReplyDelete
  3. What happens if they set another testing day for you and there is no way for you to make the new testing date? Is there various options or just one make-up test and that is all?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Does anyone know if we get the make-up exam scores around the same time as the other Feb test takers? A lot of schools have a 3/1 deadline and an extra 1-2 weeks can really affect my admission chances.

  5. Does anyone know if we get the make-up exam scores around the same time as the other Feb test takers? could someone enlightened us w/ an answer?

    ReplyDelete
  6. just called the test center: they said they would return the scores "as soon as they can". but considering that the make-ups occur within two-weeks of time, and another week, it would be close to the admission deadline.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Oh snap I never considered the deadlines. Here I was all excited about not going tomorrow. Hopefully they get this to us by 3/1.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I heard from a friend that what happens with inclement weather delays is that they attach a note with your scores explaining the reason for the delay

    ReplyDelete
  9. It'll be a different exam with different content, raw score conversions, percentile, etc. As for how to use the time, complete recent exams you haven't done already and use the extra time to do more review and solidify your understanding of the concepts. Also, read parts of my blog that you haven't read already.

LSAC will never confirm this, but I believe that in circumstances like this, LSAC gives affected students an exam that was previously administered as an undisclosed February exam. I believe they use these exams for international and Sabbath test-takers as well.

For this reason, LSAC will likely be able to get your scores back relatively quickly. Because they've already administered these exams, they've already computed percentile and raw score conversions. This statistical work is part of the reason it normally takes them about 3 weeks to come back. I can't predict when you'll get your scores back, though. I hope it's soon.

I know this is unfortunate if you're feeling ready and want to just get it over with and apply to schools, but on the bright side, you get more time to study and probably won't have to wait 20 days for your score.

I believe there is only one make-up testing date and that they do attach a note to your scores explaining the reason for the delay. I haven't been able to get through to LSAC to confirm this, though. I keep getting a busy signal.

    Either it's:

    1. a legit busy signal

    2. they decided to leave early and put on a busy signal so they won't have to deal with everyone's voicemails later - they tend to get a LOT of calls the Friday before the exam.

  10. Just spoke to a rep, she said they have no info on when the make-up tests will be given it depends on the center's availability and can be on any day withing the next 2 weeks. She also said that LSAC is not responsible for delays in score and you have to individually contact your law school to explain this situation. It's up to the school then whether or not to accept your score from the make up test :(

  14. we just got canceled in akron, ohio but not until 8:04 A.M....lsac rep said expect email this week with new date and location.

has anyone an info on location changes after weather closing? i would love to stay in cleveland!

  15. IMPORTANT INFO--PLEASE READ!

My test center ended up not closing for the snow storm of the century--even though I live 20 minutes away and have 14 inches in my driveway. Anyhow, I don't know how many of you were in my position: test center was open and you stayed in b/c you didn't want to die getting there. I called LSAC this morning and they are okay with this excuse and said to send them an email explaining that you couldn't get out of your driveway and tell them your name and LSAC account number and you will get to take a make-up test.

I am still in shock that they went ahead and had it--my test center was in the middle of a cornfield--where the bulk of the snow hit. How ridiculous is that??

  16. I was scheduled to take the exam at South Shore High School in Brooklyn and it was cancelled as of 10:50 PM Friday night. I went to bed at 10PM thinking the exam would be on and didn't find out until the morning. Of course, guess what? NO SNOW in Brooklyn. How upsetting! I haven't received any email from LSAC as of yet, and of course, I am scheduled to be in Florida the weekend of the 19th, which is when the make-up test will likely happen, seeing as next weekend is a holiday weekend. Sucks!

    ReplyDelete
  17. anoyne know if there is a site to get the percentages of types of q's on this missed test?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anybody know when the makeup test will be for those who were snowed out?

    ReplyDelete
  19. To the South Shore LSAT taker:

They are most likely having the test on the 27th. Which is ridiculous because everyone else will be getting their scores back.

    ReplyDelete
  20. To Blizzard in PA:

I also was in your position - "test center was open and you didn't want to die getting there." However despite everything else in my town being shut down besides my testing center, I figured I didn't exactly have a choice. I would have much preferred to take the makeup test instead of expending the amount of physical and emotional energy I did just in trying to get there, and I do feel I was put at a huge disadvantage because of the situation. Less than 1/3 of the people scheduled showed up.

My question to you though is - you said you called LSAC Saturday morning and got approval to take the makeup because you didn't go to your scheduled test. How did you get in touch with them on a Saturday, if they only have weekday hours? And did they say your missed LSAT would not count as a no-show?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I called them on 2/6/10 and LSAC was open and took my phone call. The lady I spoke to told me that she had a difficult time getting to LSAC Headquarters, but she got there--she was prepared to start walking if need be. They are located outside of Philly and got bombed with snow as well.

They just told me to email them my Name, LSAC Account Number and what happened to me--the rest they would take care of.

  22. Does anyone know how we are going to go about letting each of the schools we applied to know that there will be a delay in the score results? The only thing I can think of is to call the Admissions Office, but I wouldn't know who to ask for or anything. Does anyone have any ideas?

Also, does anyone know when our make-up will be? I need to drive 3 hours to get to my site and need to know obviously with enough time to prepare, get there, and if it's this Saturday ask off work. Does anyone have any idea when it will be, or can they just spring it on us?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Has anyone heard about makeup exams yet? LSAC has been closed all week due to the weather so I'm wondering which weekend they'll choose. The 12th is obviously out, and I think the 19th is impossible if they've been closed all week... 27th maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I called on Tuesday and as of then, they hadn't sent out email yet or had any information as to when the make up would be schedule. They said that they should be making a decision soon (as they have been saying). Hopefully we'll hear before the end of the week! fingers crossed...I want to get this thing over with!

    ReplyDelete
  25. It looks like many of the make-up exams will be scheduled for the 27th. That's certainly terrible news if you are expecting your February scores for this admissions cycle.

For those taking the test on the 27th, you'll be taking the test as everyone who took the test in early February is receiving their scores.

If that applies to you, I'd get in touch with your respective admissions office.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Am I the only one who hasn't received an email about the new LSAT date?
Anyone supposed to take the test at Wagner College in Staten Island? Any information would help!

    ReplyDelete
  27. @SI LSAT

You're not the only one who hasn't received an email about the new LSAT date. Many haven't.

Not all test-takers will retake on the same date, so people registered at different test centers may receive emails regarding their new date at different times.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I've heard some are scheduled for March 6th. Probably depends on when they can reschedule with the test center.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I still haven't taken the LSAT yet since I am in NJ and it was canceled last Saturday due to snow. It's really frustrating that LSAC hasn't contacted us with a reschedule date because I have a flight booked to California on Tuesday for a week! (Feb 16-23) The make-up date is supposedly either Sat Feb 20 or Sat Feb 27 but they haven't told us yet. If it is on the 20th I need to move/cancel my flight immediately, which is why I'm impatiently awaiting an email from LSAC. I don't want to land in San Diego Tuesday night and check my email just to find out the test is indeed that Saturday and I need to fly back already!

I've run out of recent PT's, I've done 49-58, some of them twice. I'm going over some games in the LG Bible, doing problems in the Kaplan Mastery Book, then planning to do that with LR next and RC if there's still time after that. Also working on my app essay.

If you have any suggestions on what I should be studying in the meantime or any advice, I'd love to hear it. I'm still following your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  30. So, I know LSAC said a make-up exam was a possibility, but what if we just decide to not take it because it's past deadlines. Can we ask for our money back? Any idea??

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's my understanding that LSAC will either refund your money or offer registration for the June exam free of charge...but I'm sure LSAC will have specific answers to your questions if you call them. (215) 968-1001

  32. I am in the same boat as "Blizzard in PA". I was scheduled to take the Feb 6 LSAT at Georgetown but could not make it there and sent an email to LSAC explaining my situation. My main concerns now are 1) since I was not originally signed up for one of the DC test centers that postponed, I will not get an email as soon as the test is rescheduled at one of the other sites, and 2) there is slight possibilitly that the postponed tests could be announced and take place before LSAC responds to my email and allows me to take one of the postponed tests at a different test center. Any idea how this might work?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I too was suppose to take test in Georgetown. LSAC Rep said that those who test center was open and still miss the test are less of a priority to those who test center actually close. This is no gaurentee that those whose miss the Georgetown test will take the make up in Feb. However, there is still a possibility. All make-ups will be givin in Feb.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Just got off the phone with LSAC. Apparently for us Georgetown folks, the exam will be rescheduled for the 27th (which is kind of obvious at this point, I suppose...)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I just got off the phone with LSAC and they assured me that the make up exam for South Shore High School in Brooklyn will be next Saturday, the 27th. They said I would receive in email by next Wednesday telling me the details of the make up exam. Kind of ridiculous that when they emailed me last Friday and said I would receive an email by the Wednesday before the exam telling me which Saturday I was taking it, they meant that I STILL HAD to wait until next Wednesday to know if my exam was going to be on the 27th. Talk about leaving you in the lurch. That means the only way to know that your test is actually on the 27th, is by waiting until NEXT Wednesday to see if you get an email saying as much. I told them I had plane tickets out of NY to FL tomorrow for the weekend and she assured me it was fine for me to go because my make up test is definitely next Saturday, the 27th.

    ReplyDelete
  36. why didn't LSAC predetermine "rain/snow" dates well in advance? Wouldn't that have saved everybody involved many many headaches? I find it incredible that LSAC didn't really have any established contigency plan other than just see what works with each school and hope it works out for everybody taking it....I find that pretty incredible considering their rigid policies when it comes to the test itself. You'd think they would have been better prepared for this. I've tried to find any way to give them the benefit of the doubt in this situation, but I just can't. They have to anticipate snow as a possibility on any given day in the winter, and it seems like they were completely blindsided by this.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Again as originally stated, LSAC told me that georgetown folks are not gaurenteed to take the test in Feb. and unless you received an email...promises or assurances over the phone doesn't hold any water. The same for those whose test site remain open during the awful storm. If a georgetown registered test taker gets an official email...please report...i know i will...common courtesy of course :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. it is not obvious that Georgetown folks will take the test considering the make up test center are designed to accommodate only the original would be test takers. therefore, Georgetown folks should pray harder for a confirmation email than the rest whose test centers actually closed

    ReplyDelete
  39. I was supposed to take it at Georgetown as well. LSAC said that unless we receive an email by tomorrow morning, the exam will be next Saturday (2/27) and we can expect an email no later than next Wednesday regarding the details. They said that a makeup test should not be a problem for Gtown test takers. They originally said all DC makeup exams have not been scheduled yet, but I spoke with a friend who was supposed to take it at Howard and shes taking it this Satuday (2/20) so who knows if you can trust what they say.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Will Georgetown folks be assigned to other test centers in DC for the 27th or will it be administered again at Georgetown? I still have not received a response to my email to LSAC about missing the Georgetown test.

Have any other DC test centers been rescheduled for the 20th or 27th yet?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Finally got an email from LSAC this morning. Georgetown people will be taking the make up test 2/27 at UMD @ 8:30am. You also have the option of not taking the make-up and instead either getting a full refund or getting scheduled to take another LSAT of your choice free of charge. You just have to fax them if you choose the latter choices before the test date. Looks like it should all work out ok!

    ReplyDelete
  42. As promised, I'm reporting that I finally got an email as well. I was a Georgetown test taker....the makeup is at University of Maryland -college park Feb. 27 8:30am. The email didn't say when the score will be released however I would be allowed to cancel by march 3. so I'm assuming that the score will not be released on mar. 1st due to the mar. 3 cancellation date. However it would be nice to cancel a score after seeing it :)

  45. Thank you so much for your blog; it's fantastic and has been a huge HUGE help in my LSAT preparation. I've recommended it highly to all of my law school-aspiring friends. Speaking of LSAT disasters though, I was wondering if you had any up-to-date information about how LSAC handles snow emergencies? As I'm sure you know, the Northeast U.S. (Boston in particular, where I'm scheduled to take my exam) is supposed to be whacked with a couple feet of snow this Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. I've read your blog post from the February 2010 cancellations in the D.C. area, and the mix-up with the Georgetown exam not actually be cancelled when it probably should have been. Fortunately, I am not applying to schools for this cycle, so a delay in the release of the scores would not be earth-shattering. However, I'm just wondering if you have any advice or words of wisdom in dealing with a potential test cancellation? Or if anything has changed in the 3 years since that last snow disaster cancellation? This test has seriously become the bane of my existence.
