February 2013 LSAT Snow Cancellation?

Are you planning to take the February 2013 LSAT on Saturday in New England? If so, you may be in for a surprise. There's a decent chance that your test center will be closed due to an impending blizzard, and your test postponed to a make-up Saturday 1-3 weeks from February 9th.

There's precedent for this - it happened in December 2009 and February 2010. In both cases, LSAC sent an email to affected test-takers and updated its website with a list of affected test centers (sidenote: inclement weather is a major reason that LSAC does not release February LSAT exams - they're saving them for future make-up test administrations.)

This year, however, it appears that LSAC is NOT sending an email to affected test-takers in advance. You must check their website (and/or the website of your test center) to determine whether your test center will be closed tomorrow.

Today (Thursday), LSAC's Director of Communications, Wendy Margolis, provided the following update about the February 2013 LSAT:

Test center supervisors are keeping us up to date as to whether sites in the northeast will be closing for tomorrow’s test due to the predicted snowstorm. We will post alerts on our website (LSAC.org) through midnight on Friday and starting again at 5 am on Saturday.

(I believe she meant Saturday's test - not tomorrow's test.)

In any case, what should you do if you're planning to take the LSAT in or near one of the most severely-affected areas, such as Boston, Hartford, Providence, Burlington, or Portland (ME)? What if you're in New York City, Buffalo, Syracuse, or Albany?

Either way, prepare as if you're still taking the LSAT this Saturday. If your test ends up being postponed, you'll hear from LSAC with a scheduled make-up date. In the past, LSAC has provided test-takers with the alternative option of either full refund or the opportunity to take the LSAT on a future test date.

Until you take the LSAT, whether it's one, two, or three weeks from now, take 2-3 timed (5-section) PrepTests per week to stay fresh (and review everything in detail afterwards, of course).

What about the potential of a delayed score release? I'm sure LSAC will work to get scores out for affected test-takers as quickly as possible. When this happened a few years ago (if my memory serves me correctly), LSAC attached a note to some test-takers' files asking law schools to extend application deadlines for affected students. I also believe LSAC managed to release scores for many affected test-takers at the same time as those who were able to take it on February 9th.

Here's hoping the storm changes course so that everyone gets to take the LSAT this weekend and be done with it!

UPDATE:

Below is the list of test centers that LSAC has already closed (as of date/time posted below):

(It's posted on their website, but some browsers are apparently not displaying the information - if you have trouble seeing the listing of closures, try a different web browser.)

NOTE: This list is being updated as closure notifications come in from test centers. If your center is closed, you will not be able to take the test on Saturday. You will receive information next week about make-up test arrangements.

If you were originally scheduled to take the LSAT at one of these locations, LSAC will email you next week with an update as to when and where you can take your make-up exam.

LSAC closed more test centers throughout the day on Friday (and then Saturday morning) as the consequences of the storm became clearer. Visit this link for the latest updates from LSAC.

If you have questions about your particular situation, I recommend that you contact LSAC by email at LSACinfo@lsac.org or by phone at 215.968.1001.

Read the comments below for important additional information from those who've contacted LSAC directly to ask questions.

  1. Steve,

What would you recommend we do if we're out of PrepTests? Obviously, I didn't see this coming, and now I'm all out of study material...

    1. Out of the relatively recent PrepTests (let's say, 40 and up), take the ones that you remember the least.

If you remember all of those too well, use some of the oldest ones. You can get them here.

  4. Some test center cancellations have been posted on the LSAC website as of 11:45pm on Thurs 2/7.

It seems pretty ad hoc at this point, perhaps up to the test centers themselves, since some centers in Boston area are closed (such as Suffolk) and some are not at this time (such as Northeastern).

My test center is closed but I haven't gotten an email yet. Any idea of when we can expect this? Probably being paranoid, but I want extra confirmation. I assume it may come out tomorrow during business hours?

  5. Steve,
If my test center is closed, but the storm ends up not being that big of a deal (it's not uncommon for the meteorologists to miss the mark with these blizzards), is there any chance of the test center re-opening? Like, would I be screwing myself over by going out with friends tonight, etc.?

    Thanks.

  7. Hi Steve,
Regarding the somewhat random test center closures: My center is currently still open (NYC area), but I'm worried about the commute (I depend on public transportation). Apparently the worst conditions will arrive overnight/tomorrow morning. It seems strange that some people have to take the risk of overly long/complicated commutes, and others not. At this point, I'd rather be part of those who will take it in ~2 weeks. Obviously, however, it's too late to change my test center. Do you happen to have any ideas what I could do?
    Thanks.

    1. My guess is that all you can do is hope they close your test center between now and then. Or, if they don't, find a place to sleep near your test center. Wish you all the best!

    2. I think that the state of emergency as well as the published travel warnings will provide sufficient grounds to justify granting a request that LSAC grant you the same options given those whose test centers administrators demonstrated the appropriate concern for the test takers' safety and thus canceled the Feb 9th administration at their locations.

The current system of closing centers used by the LSAC which imparts the sole discretion to close centers to the the center administrator is absurd. It exposes test takers to arbitrary decisions and safety risks. When there are blizzard warnings in effect that should be a sufficient reason for LSAC to cancel tests in the affected area. Trying to find a place to stay near the center the night before a blizzard should not be an option that one is expected to make.

  8. Steve, thanks for the breakdown on everything. I am (was) scheduled to take the test tomorrow at UNH Durham and the site is closed. I am leaving the country to take a new job on Monday, can you give me your best guess as to when they will reschedule the makeup test? Will it be a week, two weeks, a month? What do you think is most likely? Thank you again!

  9. Some schools are posting on their own websites that they have cancelled for tomorrow and they are not listed on LSAC.org right now. I called lsac and they said if the school posts that it's cancelled, then it's as official as if it was on their own website. One example is LIU - Post (http://www.liu.edu/post/campusalert).

    1. That isn't necessarily true. Pace U in NYC is not re-opened until noon tomorrow but when I called, they said the LSAT was still going to be administered as of now.

So you should call the school to double check.

    2. Pace NYC is now closed too.

    3. Are you sure it is closed? I called them around 7pm and they said it is open.

  10. If your testing center is NOT closed, but you are personally snowed in, you can send an email to lsacinfo@lsac.org at sometime tomorrow morning (obviously before the test) and you will be permitted to take a makeup. This came directly from the woman I spoke with at LSAC.

    2. I just called to verify that. The lady said to email and LSAC will get back to you. I asked if we would be allowed to write the makeup with the others and she said she doesn't see why not.

  11. I did not receive an email telling me that my test centre is closed and spent all day confirming it. I was told by LSAC that they DON'T send an email when the centre is closed as it would be too many emails but they do send one within a few days advising you of the new day which may or may not fall on a Saturday depending on the test centre availability. And if you can't make it to the new date you can get either a refund, or registration in the June LSAT.

  12. I'm in Toronto Canada and it's wreaking havoc here. We are literally snowed in, cars are piling-up outside, and everything is closed -- except the test hasn't been cancelled here. It boggles my mind that other places which haven't received much of anything yet, have cancelled their tests. On an average day it takes me about 40 minutes to commute to UofT, tomorrow I'll be lucky if I get there safely in two hours. What can I do if I'm unable to make it but my test has not been cancelled?

    2. I called LSAC. they said if your test centre has not been closed, send an email right away in the morning and let them know your situation and they will get back to you. The woman said she doesn't see why we shouldn't be able to do the make up as well. I'm in Toronto as well - writing at Osgoode.

    3. I'm just worried about the off-chance that she's wrong and we wouldn't get to make it up with the others...considering that she just "doesn't see why" it wouldn't work out that way. So scared. I need to know like, now. I spoke with LSAC and asked if I would have to wait until June to take it if I'm snowed-in tomorrow, and she basically told me to "wait until morning and see." If I have to find out how to make it to my testing center at the last minute, I will be screwed.

      Delete
    4. i know what you mean. i also asked what happens if we find out too late in the morning and are unable to arrive on time...and the lady said we should definitely know by 6 am...they can't notify us an hour before or something...its too last minute.

    5. I am in Toronto, specifically Mississauga. It will take me more than two hours to make it to the test centre. I am not sure what to do if I dont't make it to the test on time. I think they should have postponed the test at every centres not just at specific locations. This is so stressful.

  14. Nemo! What a great name for a storm that was so easy to find! One of my favorite inspirations comes from the movie "Finding Nemo"- "just keep swimming, just keep swimming..." We may have to follow Dori's lead and "just keep studying, just keep studying..."

Good luck, and before you get back to it you might want to take a minute and smile.

  15. I'm in Albany, NY. All local testing centers are closed, though it looks as though we won't be hit with anything substantial. Should I travel to Syracuse to have a shot to take it there tomorrow. A woman at LSAC said it would be at the discretion of the the proctor whether or not to allow me to take it. It is a 2 hr drive but I really want to get it done tomorrow.

  17. As if I wasn't nervous enough, I am now concerned and stressed out about getting to and from my test center tomorrow. They have not cancelled yet and I am unsure if they will. Getting to the test center may not be horrible because it is so early but I am sure that 5 hours later it will be quite treacherous. I am unsure what to think and u feel as though the stress of traveling there in the morning may affect my performance IF I even make it there

    ReplyDelete
  18. The weather is seriously bad here, and should continue to be overnight. I'm scared that something will happen if I try to make it there if it doesn't cancel, and I'm also terrified of the possibility that I wouldn't get to make up the test if I tell LSAC I can't make it because of the storm. This is ridiculous!

    1. This is causing a lot of people a lot of stress and there will be some of us who will not wake up to a cancellation and will have to risk our safety getting to the test center. It's not fair at all. It hasn't started snowing here yet but it is scheduled to start over night and I'm sure that by tomorrow afternoon it will be horrible. Some people may not mind driving in a blizzard but I do not think I should be required to risk my safety just because some people want to leave the testing center open. Its causing me a lot of stress!

  19. According to earlier posts, LSAC is telling people to contact them in the morning if you are unable to make it to the test and they will get back to you. This does not seem like a very good system though as some people will need more time than others to make it to the center... If they do not contact you until last minute saying u need to write then what?

  20. I was stressed the whole day about whether my test center was going to be open or not and called LSAC regarding what would happen in those cases where a test taker could not make it to an open site because of inclement weather. I was told that I should fax a signed letter specifying that I was not able to arrive to the test center due to weather conditions (with, presumably, any other relevant commute-related details). This letter should include: 1) my name (no surprise there) and 2) account number; it should be marked Attn: Test Administration. The letter would then be "reviewed" and I would be provided with options shortly thereafter (within the coming week). The fax number I was given while speaking with an LSAC rep on the phone is: 215-968-1277. When I emailed LSAC the same question earlier, I was given a separate fax: 215-968-1119. I hope this is helpful and can relieve at least some of the stress some of you might be feeling right now - I am way too familiar with that feeling after today!

    ReplyDelete
  21. When you say "reviewed" do you mean that they would decide whether or not you should be given the option to rewrite?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, though they implied (and I know this isn't worth as much as a definite statement) that this wasn't a question of whether a new test would be possible but, rather, when it would happen. It sounded as though they hadn't decided yet on how to accommodate those of us who might not be able to make it to a test center that is open because of weather conditions (for instance, whether to shoe-horn us into test center retakes that might already be near capacity or create entirely new ones). They used ambiguous language to avoid committing themselves to a particular policy, but the implication was that there would be "options" - in the plural, which was striking to me. I don't like the ambiguity, especially after way too many Logical Reasoning sections, but I think they are trying to get a grasp on just how many people they would have to accommodate outside of the postponed centers before concretely laying out our options. Very frustrating, but that's my understanding to date.

  22. Does anyone know if we will still have the option to "Withdraw Registration" if the test is cancelled tomorrow and postponed to some other week? Will we also have a choice of a refund and scheduling the test to say June? I just don't want an "absent" on my LSAT score if some of us can't make it to the test. Will we all take it on the same day? Or will it vary
Will we all take the same makeup test? Or will different make-ups be issued?
Will we take the test at our respective original test centers, or will they consolidate regionally into some miserable 500 person test camps.
Although the test is non-disclosed, that doesn't mean its never seen, wouldn't using a prior Feb test run the chance of someone having actually sat for that Feb admin?

  36. Kat, I haven't heard back from LSAC yet regarding a makeup date. Getting antsy because I'd hate to get an email Friday saying that the makeup will be Saturday morning. I'd imagine they'd give folks more notice due to travel arrangements and other commitments.

    1. That's exactly what I fear as well! My exam was cancelled at 7pm the night before which was frustrating enough. LSAC told me that urban areas, like NY where I live, have to be patient due to the large number of centers that have to be administering the makeups.

  37. Apparently some people have reported that after talking to their test centers the LSAT will be administered, at least in some places, on Saturday.

  38. I'd be so upset if the test was on Saturday and no official word from LSAC yet. Not to mention that'd be deeply irresponsible of LSAC.

  40. Hi everyone,

So I called my test center (Pace U, NYC) and they said that the test had been scheduled for this Saturday. I've received no email from LSAC as of yet about this.

Moral of the story: call you test center. I wouldn't be relying on LSAC for prompt notifications at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Is anyone testing at Brooklyn College? I just called them and after being transferred about 5 times, I was not able to find anything out. This last minute stuff is killer!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Did anyone who was unable to make it to Toronto's test get a response from LSAC? They are now telling me that they can't promise anything and will need to "review" my file. No promise of when I'd be notified, nothing. Because that's apparently the conduct of professionalism. It baffles me that other local universities closed and UofT did not. It takes me almost 2 hours to travel to UofT on a normal day, I was not going to travel through that storm.

If anyone finds out or hears anything, please, please notify me!

  44. Just called the main line at Pace Univ myself. Woman on the other end confirmed rather quickly that the makeup date is this Saturday. Same time, same paperwork. She was surprised LSAC hasn't sent out an email yet.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Just got off the phone with LSAC. They said if you are scheduled to take the make up this Saturday they are trying to get all those emails out tonight, otherwise, just keep your eyes open for the email, as they had 73 test centers close and are still working on the logistics of all the make ups. (That's a small comfort, I know, but you can't blame them too much for that)

Also, as a heads up, your original test center will not necessarily also be your make up location, which I believe is in line with what has happened for some in past years. I called my original test center (Brandeis University) and they said they hadn't heard about a make up date yet, but it was their impression that the students originally at that center may be transferred to another center nearby for the make up.

  46. Has anyone gotten an answer from LSAC as to what would happen if you cannot make the makeup day? Tough luck in that case?

    1. Either a refund, or you can schedule for June free of charge.

  47. Pree,
I am in the same situation as you. LSAC apparently does NOT want to let those who did not make it to their test centers take the make-up exam with everyone else. The option I received was to get a refund or take the test in June. It's shocking - and incredibly unfair, especially since we were all told over the phone that we would be accommodated, and that all that we had to do was to send out an e-mail in the morning saying that we were snowed in, etc.. Anyone else in this situation? Maybe a collective effort will make them come to their senses.

  48. I just wanted to get some others thoughts on the situation that took place in RI with the makeup test. We all know they cancelled many locations due to the blizzard, and all the centers including Brown, PC, URI and other locations all were rescheduled to take it the following Saturday at Rhode Island College. During the test, specifically right at the beginning of the second section, a mass hysteria was taking place in the building. It went on for well over 45 minutes, and all of the proctors were scrambling in and out of the rooms. On break many of us asked about how this could have all went on. It was discovered that there were tv news reporters, massive amounts of high school students, parents, and Representative Jim Langevin, holding a statewide gathering for FAFSA. In addition to this we found gathering for some free smoke detector program, additionally, they also apparently scheduled a major gathering for a drama club/organization.

Not only was I, but it could be reasonably assumed by the reactions of others that we were all very upset. I spoke personally with the main proctor and she said she had no control and even contacted the school public safety for assistance, only to be told there was nothing anyone could do. I don’t blame the head proctor, I understand how they could tell her to take a back seat when you had a congressional representative with local tv cameras in the building. However, how could have all this happened in the first place? There are so many buildings on the Rhode Island College campus, and someone scheduled them all in one building at the same time? I know for my situation and I am sure of many others, this was our last chance to to perform our best in hopes of getting scholarships money for law school, or to get into that top school of choice.

First, how could LSAC allow this? Second, does anyone within the RIC community understand what the test means to us? At the least, why wouldn’t someone post signs that ‘ a major test’ was taken place. There are so many things that could have been done, and not one precaution took place. Even the main proctor told me at the end that no one would help her and the only response she could get was that they didn’t schedule anything on our floor.

She was very apologetic to our situation, even acknowledging that last week, they closed the building down for the test. And now with every kid from the state scheduled to take the fen LSAT now coming to this one location, they couldn’t even move us to another building?

I hope anyone out there that was involved in this or knows someone who was, that we all can present at the very least, to petition LSAC to give us a fee waiver for the June test.

  49. Regarding Winter Storm Nemo, I was in a situation where my test center, amazingly enough, chose to remain open despite the weather. Two other testing locations, Albany and Oneonta, were closed. In any event, I did what was suggested and sent an e-mail to LSAC the morning of (well before 8AM eastern) the February 9th exam. This is what I wrote:

"Hello. My name is John Doe and I am currently registered to take the February exam at 8:00AM at SUNY Binghamton. Unfortunately, the commute to Binghamton from my current residence is about an hour, and that's under normal driving conditions.

At the time of composing this e-mail, SUNY Binghamton has not been added to the list of officially cancelled testing locations. However, I heard through a direct LSAC source earlier today, verbally, that if your particular testing center has NOT been closed, but you are personally faced with treacherous conditions as a result of Winter Storm Nemo, that you would be permitted to take the makeup exam at some point within the next 1 to 3 weeks. I certainly fall into that category, and I guess my question is simple: is this absolutely true?

I've also been advised to "officially" bring my own personal situation to LSAC's attention before the start of the exam. Please accept this e-mail as such notice.

A prompt and thorough response would be greatly appreciated, as time and clarity are of the utmost importance at this very late hour.

Thank you for your time and continued assistance.

    Regards,

    John Doe."

This is the response I received from LSAC on February 11th:

"Thank you for your question for the Law School Admission Council:

I have forwarded your e-mail to the appropriate division of LSAC for review. Please be sure the e-mail address in your account is current. You will be contacted after the review is completed.

    Sincerely,

    LSAC
    Candidate Communications
    LSACinfo@LSAC.org."

The e-mail address in my account is in fact current. I have been checking it religiously every day for the last 10 days, sometimes multiple times throughout the day, waiting patiently for a response... any response. I still haven't received one. I'm not quite sure what can possibly be "under review" almost 2 weeks after the snow storm.

I truly hope I hear something soon, because taking the June exam would mean not starting law school until the fall of 2014, and that would be borderline devastating.

    1. Hey "John Doe", I was in the exact same position. I did the exact same thing. I checked religiously, contacted them, and today I finally received a response. I got a refund and am able to reschedule for June's exam, however no make-up. Which is complete and total BS. This is LSAC for you.
