Your instruction was to replace the phrases above (unless, excepts, etc) with "if not".
Here's the rule from the problem:
Unless she votes against the judicial activism bill, she will vote for the immigration bill.

So this is "unless" not J then I because she never says she will not vote for I.
If you replace the "unless" phrase with "if not" its "if not J then I".

In the blog post regarding this rule it says "Not B unless A". The "unless" gets replaced by the "if not" and it is rewritten " Not B if not A" but then this can be rewritten to match the "if-then" template as " If NOT A then NOT B"
but the difference between the blog explanation in the rule in the game is that one says NOT and the other doesn't. It is not stated in the rule that she will not vote for the immigration Bill.

Even in the other example in your blog about the turkey:
It's not Thanksgiving (B) unless there's turkey (A). (I know it's not Thanksgiving for a few weeks, but I'm hungry for turkey and stuffing now.)

With "if not" replacing "unless":

It's not Thanksgiving if there's no turkey.

AGAIN the NOT id clearly stated, so someone please make sense of this for me.Rynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09087138731990523731noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10294095.post-15995987351825177112020-05-17T14:16:39.970-04:002020-05-17T14:16:39.970-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Rynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09087138731990523731noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10294095.post-4337506379769565222017-10-26T17:08:03.628-04:002017-10-26T17:08:03.628-04:00These are all CONDITIONAL rules. It is important t...These are all CONDITIONAL rules. It is important to remember that these "if" conditions are UNIDIRECTIONAL (that's why they're written with an arrow that points in one direction).

For Q7, remember the diagram is (NotI)--> (NotJ)--> E--> (NotG)--> [and any of the following three possibilities: (NotH + NotD) or (NotH + D) or (H + NotD)]. The new rule can then be represented by [F--> NotJ]. To get the contrapositive of the new rule, you flip and negate it: [J--> NotF]. See the diagrams he links to at the bottom of the page for the complete contrapositive diagram. On to the answer choices:

Option A can be rewritten as: F--> NotG. Looking back at the diagram this is true.
Option B can be rewritten as: NotE-->NotF. Looking back at the contrapositive diagram, this is true.
Option C can be rewritten as: NotI-->F. This does NOT have to be true. There are no arrows pointing from a NotI to a positive F on the diagram. The new rule (F--> NotJ) begins at F; it does not affect I. Voting against J does not guarantee that I will be voted against. For conditionals, remember to always move forward with the arrow--not against.
Option D can be rewritten as: NotJ-->NotG. This is true.
Option E can be rewritten as NotI--> at least 3 OTHER Not-votes. This is true because NotI--> NotJ--> NotG--> [and at LEAST a NotH or NotD, but both NotH and NotD are possible]. The number three comes from NotJ, NotG, and either NotH, NotD, or both (the word OTHER (other than NotI is purposeful).

This is the way I understand it. Don't let contrapositives trick you into thinking that conditionals (i.e. "If..., then...) are bidirectional. The arrow symbols are chosen for a reason; don't fall into the trick of going backward and thinking that conditional rules are unconditional.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10294095.post-29620130616902261012017-06-01T19:37:22.244-04:002017-06-01T19:37:22.244-04:00If I is out, then J, G and at least one of H/D (bu...If I is out, then J, G and at least one of H/D (but not necessarily both) have to be out. None of the other posts are making this clear to me! If immigration is out, judicial activism is out as well. If judicial activism is out, then the necessary condition of the new rule (free trade in, judicial activism out) is satisfied, thus making the necessary condition satisfied as well. Should I not take the contrapositive of the new rule (if J is in F has to be out)? Steve, I even looked at your explanation and using those diagrams I still understand I being out if F is in. Heeelp! I'm dying with these grouping games, I've actually given up and just moved on to LR because I'm so frustrated.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10294095.post-87146854732689702142013-03-14T22:01:29.540-04:002013-03-14T22:01:29.540-04:00I am following your 3 month study guide religiousl...I am following your 3 month study guide religiously, btw...Samhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17224387324110602140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10294095.post-23821116617344219472013-03-14T22:00:29.817-04:002013-03-14T22:00:29.817-04:00Well, Steve, you must be onto something because I ...Well, Steve, you must be onto something because I found the following similar logical reasoning deduction in the very next question in your 3 month study guide.

This is taken directly out of KAPLAN's Study guide.
PREPTEST 36 #1

Rule 1’s contrapositive reads “If the stand carries pears then it doesn’t carry kiwis,” which means
that the rule boils down to “I can never choose both pears and kiwis,” or “NEVER KP” in your nearby
scratchwork. Note that the rule doesn’t mean “one or the other” (the rule permits us to choose neither
kiwis nor pears), but simply that the moment we pick one of the two fruits, the other is to be tossed out.Samhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17224387324110602140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10294095.post-63444490068335437512013-03-14T20:14:06.927-04:002013-03-14T20:14:06.927-04:00
