So receiving the highest score is a sufficient condition for winning the gold medal.

highest score --> gold medal

AND

The gymnast wins the gold medal ONLY IF she receives the highest score.

This means that receiving the highest score is the only way to win the gold medal. If the gymnast wins the gold medal, she must have received the highest score. So receiving the highest score is also a necessary condition for winning the gold medal.

gold medal --> highest score

So when you combine these two together, you end up with

gold medal <--> highest score

This is different from the Manhattan --> New York example. In that one, living in Manhattan is sufficient to prove you live in NY. However, it is not necessary; you could live in Queens or elsewhere in NY.

On the other hand, with an "if and only if" statement, both conditions are necessary and sufficient for each other. This is why we use a double arrow; the conditional is true going both ways.Natalienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10294095.post-87008812213147453502013-02-07T09:27:00.166-05:002013-02-07T09:27:00.166-05:00I didn't really take a diagnostic, I studied f...I didn't really take a diagnostic, I studied first and didn't take a timed preptest until I was already familiar with the question types.Natalienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10294095.post-53586860449341000092013-02-07T09:26:00.783-05:002013-02-07T09:26:00.783-05:00Definitely Harvard (sadly my gpa isn't high en...Definitely Harvard (sadly my gpa isn't high enough for YS)Natalienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10294095.post-8647753873682827472013-02-07T09:24:55.853-05:002013-02-07T09:24:55.853-05:00I took about 10, but I also did a lot of individua...I took about 10, but I also did a lot of individual sections.Natalienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10294095.post-78926617782709174052013-01-22T16:03:22.661-05:002013-01-22T16:03:22.661-05:00Enjoy YSEnjoy YSTheodorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04825920936636375782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10294095.post-50833096454169322742013-01-21T14:16:24.659-05:002013-01-21T14:16:24.659-05:00You're my hero.You're my hero.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10294095.post-46968862901160599302013-01-20T04:58:43.902-05:002013-01-20T04:58:43.902-05:00Would it be all right to know your initial score? ...Would it be all right to know your initial score?
