Free LSAT Logic Game: Grouping: Splitting

LSAT Blog reader Caleb wrote this LSAT Logic Game.

I've modified the game's questions slightly, but Caleb provided the core. All complaints and/or compliments about the game's topic and rules should be directed to him :)

However, please thank him in the comments for allowing me to share the game with all of you!

***

I categorize the game as Grouping: Splitting since it divides the variables into two groups, both of which are present. Some similar LSAC-written Logic Games are listed at the bottom of this post.

Please post your thoughts and questions in the comments! Next week, I'll publish a complete explanation of the game's setup.

If you are named Jacob or Hezekiah, or if you are a seagull, I'm sorry.

Here's the Logic Game:

Seven seagulls: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G, will shit on the goofy hats of two men, Jacob and Hezekiah. Seagulls A, B, C, and D are male, and seagulls E, F, and G are female. Each seagull will shit on exactly one of the two men, and each man will be shit on by at least one seagull.

The following conditions must apply:

At least two male seagulls will shit on Jacob.
At least two female seagulls will shit on Hezekiah.
If D shits on Jacob, then F does not shit on Hezekiah.
If D does not shit on Jacob, then G shits on Jacob.
A and B will shit on the same man.

1. Which one of the following could be a complete and accurate list of the seagulls that shit on Jacob?

(A) A, B, D, F
(B) A, B, E
(C) A, B, E, D
(D) A, C, D, F
(E) C, G

2. If G shits on Jacob, which one of the following seagulls must also shit on Jacob?

(A) B
(B) C
(C) D
(D) E
(E) F

3. If B shits on Hezekiah, then which one of the following must be true?

(A) A shits on the same person as C
(B) A shits on the same person as F
(C) B shits on the same person as C
(D) C shits on the same person as F
(E) D shits on the same person as G

4. If G does not shit on Jacob, which one of the following seagulls CANNOT shit on Hezekiah?

(A) A
(B) B
(C) C
(D) D
(E) E

5. If exactly 4 seagulls shit on Jacob, which one of the following is a pair of seagulls, both of which must be among those that shit on him?

(A) A, B
(B) B, D
(C) B, G
(D) C, G
(E) D, F

6. Each of the following could be true EXCEPT:

(A) All 4 male seagulls shit on Jacob.
(B) All 3 female seagulls shit on Hezekiah.
(C) Exactly 5 seagulls shit on Jacob.
(D) Exactly 4 seagulls shit on Hezekiah.
(E) Exactly 3 seagulls shit on Jacob.

7. Which one of the following seagulls must shit on Hezekiah?

(A) A
(B) B
(C) C
(D) D
(E) E

Good luck, dudes!

  3. Haha! That was great : )

I hope I get a game like this one the Oct LSAT. Actually, since chances are I wont, I think I am going to do this logic game before the actual test to warm up my mind, body and soul...

    Thanks Caleb & Steve

Oh and Lisa Holl Chang, if you reuse your previous work (hypotheticals from previous questions) for question #7 it only takes a few seconds to eliminate the incorrect answers!

Good luck everyone, and as always thank you steve!!

  4. Oh and just to be a nerd, in the setup guidelines it says: "Each seagull will shit on exactly one of the two men, and each man will be shit on by at least one seagull."

But it should say: "Each seagull will shit on exactly one of the two men, and each man will be SHAT on by at least one seagull."

    Cheers!

  5. You can solve this entire game up front, by making three options. First make a set where D shits on Jacob, and a second set where D shits on Caleb, then place AB where they can go, and voila, all the scenarios are accounted for and the questions are a cake walk

  6. Props to Caleb!

...and Steve as always, of course!

  7. Uh, Phil...

"First make a set where D shits on Jacob, and a second set where D shits on Caleb,"

Nowhere in the setup do I get shit on by a seagull. Keep it up, buddy, and YOU will be appearing in my next created game...

    :)

    Caleb out.

  8. Caleb,

Can I make you a fake ID saying you're me, fly you in, and you take this thing for me next week? I can't get off work, and I already paid for it.

    haha

  9. Work, smerk. When you're given a suitcase full of gold bricks after selling your soul to Biglaw, you won't care about such things. Eye on the prize, mate.

And Ivan, although "shat" has found its way through common usage into our idiom (and even some dictionaries), I will reserve the right to forgo the term in favor of the more traditional "shit."

  10. That was a REAL crappy problem! HAH!!

I usually talk to myself when attacking the LG problems, and today I took the bait and tackled your "shit on Jacob or Hezekiah" game. After, I got over my initial shock of the material. Do you know how many times I said shit to myself trying to deduce the answers, well, I would say more times than I have said it all year. That's what you call a deep shit and talk shit kind of problem. That would be a riot if it appeared on the LSAT.

  14. Thanks so much for the game Caleb!

Steve - do you have an explanation posted for PrepTest34, Game 4? I'm totally stuck and can't really see my way out.

    Thanks!!

  15. I haven't read the game yet, but the title made me laugh out loud! Thank you Steve for providing low-cost study schedules and bringing fun into them that makes the process bearable.

  17. Hello! For Question 5, I'm afraid I don't see how the answer is A. There are two scenarios where exactly four seagulls will shit on Jacob:

    (1) J: DAFB / H: EGC
    (2) J: ABGC / H: EFD

That makes all five answer options possible for Q5! Answers A, B, and E are possible for scenario 1, and C and D for scenario 2. What am I missing?

    1. Hey Aimee,
      5. If exactly 4 seagulls shit on Jacob, which one of the following is a pair of seagulls, both of which MUST BE among those that shit on him?

The question is asking what pair MUST BE TRUE in ALL scenarios. You did good when your worked it out because AB stay the same in each scenario.

      Delete
  18. Aimee, the question is asking which pair must shit on Jacob so that exactly 4 seagulls shit on him, no more and no less.

It's A and B because in any other scenario you will be unable to attribute exactly 4 seagulls to Jacob. Another way to look at it would be to look at the scenario you described above and see what they have in common; they both have A and B for Jacob.

    Perhaps the wording confused you?

  19. Ah, darn. I wrote this back when I was just starting out logic games, and I inevitably confused "could" for "must." Thanks for catching that!

  20. Great question!

Would this be regarded as "difficult" on an LSAT?

(Or is there no such thing as varying degrees of difficulty for LSAT questions?)

  29. Super marking modification. My thinking was about to stop working just diving into your logic game. AHa, what you made just using some alphabets. The idea of sea girls on the goofy hats of two men indeed wondered me. It's cool gaming innovation. I love to participate surely. Though today my browsing target was to register for online party games, this was marveled me out of imagination.
