What do you wish you'd known before you began your LSAT prep?

LSAT Blog Wish Known Before LSAT Prep
I asked the following questions to some blog readers who recently took the LSAT:
What do you know now that you wish you'd known before starting your LSAT prep? What would you have done differently?
Here are their responses:

-I wish I had relaxed the day of the test instead of taking caffeine pills.

-I never got a good night's sleep before any of my exams. I guess if I were to do it differently, I'd take an ambien the night before exam day.

-I wish I had conceptualized what a skills-based test it was. I read and 'understood', but it took two test days and six months of practising to realize how repetition and skills based it was. It took some time to realize what really mattered in taking the test.

-I was way late in the study game, so I wish I had realized that the LSAT isn't something you learn facts for...it's more about changing how you think, analyzing, etc. It takes a lot of seemingly repetitive mind work!

-I wouldn't have taken the LSAT while working full time and going to school full time.

-I probably would have done a few practice runs of the writing sample.

-I would have started timing myself a little sooner.

-I wish I'd had a plan B in case I panic (e.g., mentally prepare to skip questions).

-I wish I'd known that Kaplan courses don't necessarily work. I did 3 months of Kaplan prep and my final LSAT score was 2 points lower than the first full length LSAT I ever took.

-I probably would have given myself more time to study.

If you've taken the LSAT before (or have been prepping for a while), how would you answer those questions?

  2. Take your time studying, read things very very closely and do not rush into worrying about time. You will fix time on your own with practice and with proper care. First and foremost, come to understand the unique language that the test relies on and the special kind of thinking you need to develop to tackle questions. As time goes on, you will start to see the patterns and by that time, "timing" will become less and less of an issue.

  3. Make copies of everything before you write all over it, especially the games sections. Also take a timed practice section everyday no matter how busy you are. Treat it like a job.
